Facilities and Accessibility

This guide includes the locations of our toilets and baby-changing rooms, as well as information about step-free access between the floors of our 5 buildings.

Museum-wide facilities and accessibility information

  • Smooth paths connect all of our buildings for easier pram and wheelchair access.
  • You can collect a large-print map at the information desk near our main entrance (please let us know in advance if you require a specific font size).
  • There is step-free access to all floors of our multi-level buildings.
  • We can lend you a wheelchair or a collapsible chair—just ask at the information desk.
  • We are a breastfeeding-friendly museum.
  • We have a buggy park next to our main entrance—though please take any valuable items with you as we don’t secure this area.
  • You can hire a small locker for £1, or a large locker for £2. This charge is non-refundable. Lockers are on the lower-ground floor (basement). Go down the staircase between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • We have a prayer room in our 1830 Warehouse. Let one of the team know if you’d like to use it.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome. Ask us for a water bowl.
  • There is a hearing loop in the Great Western Warehouse.

Open Great Western Warehouse

Collections Centre including Treasures Gallery and object handling area (lower-ground floor)

  • The nearest toilets are on the lower-ground floor (basement) near the museum main entrance. Go back up to the ground floor and down the staircase between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • The nearest wheelchair-accessible toilets are just at the top of the staircase near the museum main entrance, between the shop and the Warehouse Café. 
  • The nearest baby-changing room is at the top of the staircase between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • There is step-free access throughout this gallery.

Revolution Manchester (ground floor)

  • The nearest toilets are on the lower-ground floor (basement) near the main entrance. Go down the staircase between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • The nearest wheelchair-accessible toilets are just at the top of the staircase between the shop and the Warehouse Café. 
  • The nearest baby-changing room is at the top of the staircase between the shop and the Warehouse Café.

Experiment (first floor)

Warehouse Bistro (first floor)

  • The restaurant has high-chairs, a microwave for heating baby food and a milk bottle warmer.
  • There is step-free access throughout the restaurant.

Learning Loft and classrooms (second floor)

  • The Learning Loft is only for booked groups during the school term, but we open it as a picnic space during school holidays.
  • The nearest toilets (including wheelchair-accessible) are inside the Learning Loft.
  • The nearest baby-changing room is in the Warehouse Restaurant.
  • There is step-free access throughout the Learning Loft.

Conference Centre (second floor)

  • The nearest toilets (including wheelchair-accessible) are inside the Conference Centre.
  • The nearest baby-changing room is in the Warehouse Restaurant.
  • There is step-free access throughout the Conference Centre.

Open Power Hall

Power Hall gallery

  • The nearest toilets (including wheelchair-accessible) are outside on the train platform between the Power Hall and the Station Building.
  • The nearest baby-changing room is at the top of the staircase near the museum main entrance (in the Great Western Warehouse), between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • There is step-free access throughout the Power Hall.

Steam train rides (depart from outside the Power Hall)

  • The nearest toilets (including wheelchair-accessible) are outside on the train platform between the Power Hall and the Station Building.
  • The nearest baby-changing room is at the top of the staircase near the museum main entrance (in the Great Western Warehouse), between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • Our train carriages cannot accommodate wheelchairs.
  • Hearing aid loops are available on the steam train ride—please ask a member of the team.

Open Air and Space Hall

  • The nearest toilets are just inside the entrance of the Air and Space Hall.
  • The nearest wheelchair-accessible toilets are at the top of the staircase near the museum main entrance (in the Great Western Warehouse), between the shop and the Warehouse Café. Please ask for the key at the information desk.
  • The nearest baby-changing room is at the top of the staircase near the museum main entrance (in the Great Western Warehouse), between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • There is step-free access throughout the gallery except for the simulator ride.

Morphis and Fly360 simulator ride

  • The nearest toilets are just inside the entrance of the Air and Space Hall.
  • The nearest wheelchair-accessible toilets are just at the top of the staircase near the museum main entrance (in the Great Western Warehouse), between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • The nearest baby-changing room is at the top of the staircase near the museum main entrance (in the Great Western Warehouse), between the shop and the Warehouse Café.
  • There is no step-free access to the simulator ride, and it can’t accommodate a wheelchair.

  • There is step-free access to the first and second class booking halls from the lower yard.

Wellcome Image Awards— (ground floor from station platform)
